I just finished watching Rubber.

I waited over a year to see it and it was finally released exclusively on-demand today. Thank you Mr. Oizo/Quentin Dupieux, thank you Gaspard Auge (for your cameo and contributions to the amazing soundtrack), thank you Busy P (for your cameo and running the label that introduced me to Oizo). I absolutely loved this film. So many of my friends won’t understand my appreciation for it but I don’t even care. I’m already watching it a second time. I am totally ok with being a fanboy about it too. Mr. Oizo is such an inspiration to me. His style of producing, film-making, and DJing is so refreshing and unique. Much respect.

More Rubber (Review)

Here's a video review of Rubber for those of you who hate to read. Nice to hear that the film is so awesome, especially from a guy who knew nothing about Quentin Dupieux prior.

Rubber

I am still waiting for the release of Quentin Dupieux's (Mr. Oizo) new film, Rubber. From the sounds of it, the reception has been very positive as it makes it's rounds on the film festival circuit. This tease from Mr. Oizo's twitter has me eagerly awaiting the soundtrack as well. If it's anything like the EP it will be fantastic:

"Our Day Will Come"

Notre Jour Viendra, meaning "our day will come", is a film being released Sept. 15 by French filmmaker Romain Gavras. From what I have read and seen it looks like it's going to be almost uncomfortably intense but there are two reasons to be excited.

1.) It's a film by Romain Gavras so chances are it will be good and it will be artful.
2.) The official soundtrack is composed by SebastiAn. It will rock.

For those who don't know, Romain Gavras is responsible for music videos such as "Signatune" by Dj Mehdi (Ed Banger), "Stress" by Justice (Ed Banger), and more recently, the controversial video for the M.I.A. single "Born Free". Gavras also collaborated with Justice to film their tour documentary "A Cross The Universe", a must see. Ed Banger Records' very own, SebastiAn, was tasked with creating the soundtrack to this upcoming film and I cannot wait to hear what he has done. The LP is slated for a September release as well but you can already find some snippets of music from the film online. Being that it is entirely in French, the synopsis is hard to decipher but judging by the trailer it seems to be a pretty graphic and gritty story. That aside, I will definitely give it a try if English subtitles become available, if for nothing else, to at least experience Romain's cinematography and SebastiAn's music working together. See the trailer below (NSFW).

Here's a rough translation: "My hair bothered you, I let it grow. My actions, my attitudes disturb you. And nonetheless I will amplify them. And finally, taking in your sarcasm, I rest indifferent. So that I may finally become he which I must be. And despite this disgust, this shame... you will love me, for that which I am."

A Killer Tire

I don't even know where to begin with this one because it is so well known and unknown at the same time and there are things to talk about on multiple levels so I'm going to keep it brief and cut to the specifics I want to show.  Mr. Oizo, one of my favorite DJs/producers/film makers/wierdos is has a new movie called Rubber about a tire that comes to life and goes on a rampage.  It was shown at the Cannes International Film Festival not too long ago and is being shown in Montreal very soon and will hopefully be released within the year. I have always loved everything Oizo makes because his musical and cinematic style is so unique and unconventional. There are very few people out there as odd as him but he knows how to make odd things work.

As with any movie, there needs to be a soundtrack.  Who better to make the soundtrack for Rubber than Oizo himself?  I agree.  He has also enlisted the help of fellow Ed Banger label-mate and one half of Justice, Gaspard Auge.  This brings me to the point of this post.  Not only am I extremely excited for this film but for the soundtrack as well.  I can't imagine how mind bending both products are going to be. To give you some idea and to bring you up to speed I have included a zany teaser for the film and soundtrack as well as a sampler of some of the music here.  If you have never experienced anything by Mr. Oizo don't be discouraged.  It can take time to appreciate the art behind his noise.  I have been following the progress of the film and I will update accordingly with release dates.  Get excited people!

Transformers 2 reaction

Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen was released at midnight last night/this morning and unfortunately I was not as impressed as I was with the first installment. This sequel was fun, obviously action packed, visually stunning, dramatic, etc. etc. etc. but it was almost too much. I felt like there were a lot of unnecessary aspects here including exploitation of Meghan Fox's good looks, the fulfillment of racial stereotypes via two of the new Autobot characters, and lots and lots of cheap humor. Yes I agree, Meghan Fox is quite attractive but does that validate the need for multiple camera angles that scan her entire body while she changes outfits, runs in slow motion, or works on a motorcycle while bending over it with short shorts on? Do robots really need to have obvious resemblances to the races they are negatively portraying? When did Transformers become a comedy? Maybe I am just getting too old or something, I honestly did feel like I was in high school again given the amount of youngins in the theater. Maybe if I was in 10th grade I would laugh at everything and let sex and product placement sell the movie for me too. Don't be discouraged though, the film as a whole was still pretty decent. The bar was set very high by the first film so I think my expectations were just too bold this time around.
